I stepped way out of my comfort zone with this novel, mainly because contemporary fiction is not something that I will initially pluck from the shelves. However, since it's one of the YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) 2016 Teens' Top Ten Nominees, I knew I needed to read it just to see what all of the hype is about. AND this is a book that is currently in production for a film adaptation so I know that once the film trailers start rolling, the readers will begin to flock toward the book.
This novel takes a look at the intricacies of mental health and suicide, particularly in the lives of teenagers. Readers follow the story of two teens- Finch, a young man with quite the reputation who is fascinated with death and all of the ways he could kill himself; and Violet- a young woman who seems to have it all, but struggles with her own demons after her sister's untimely and tragic death. The two students end up working on a project together and their shared experiences, pains, and dreams make them an unlikely, but important pairing on their own journeys of discovery. Fans of The Fault in our Stars and Eleanor and Park will fall hard for this "heart-wrenching love story about a girl who learns to live from a boy who intends to die." While there are moments where the plot line can be predictable (which is why I'm not a fan of Mr. Nick Sparks--sorry folks!), it was worth the read.
